Max Cooper:
I have been exploring the difficulties of communicating with words as part of my new Unspoken Words album project. I was thinking about how to visualise the idea, and started chatting to artist and machine learning specialist Xander Steenbrugge about a system for converting words to visual stories. The idea was to take the writings of Ludwig Wittgenstein, who tackled this question of the difficulties of using words to explain our selves and our place in the world, and to have the AI system re-interpret these writings in visual form, making a direct visual representation of the Unspoken Words album concept.
It's interesting for me to see the incomprehensible philosophical language interpreted visually like this, full of symbolism and the boundaries between language, our selves, and the world, broken down into flowing abstraction. I haven't really taken it all in yet, I feel like there's more to discover in it than I can appreciate. The system has a lot more potential too, we will be running a version where you can have your own words turned into visuals and music as well, keep an eye out on my socials and mailers for that if you'd like to get involved.
The music was a similar departure from my usual interpretation of ideas, where I applied a half time drum and bass format with more aggression and sharpness of sound design. It’s a club track, but for me, an exotic form of club track. The name came from Wittgenstein’s private language argument, and the difficulty of communicating an entirely internal, subjective object to others when we can never directly show the object to each other. He uses the analogy of a beetle in a box, and I refer to the idea instead as our exotic contents.
Xander Steenbrugge:
From the very start of this collaboration, Max and myself were very eager to leverage
the latest advances in AI to directly visualize language through the mind of the machine.
For the past few months, in fact, I've been exploring this approach using a combination
of two machine learning models: a generative system called VQGAN, which can generate pixels
starting from a blank canvas, and a perceptual system called CLIP that guides this generator
by scoring how well the generated imagery matches a given language prompt. Through this
feedback loop, the system can be used to directly convert language into the visual domain.
After an early phase of experimentation with this technique, we quickly settled on Wittgenstein's
Tractatus as a great narrative for this technique as it deals directly with the relationship between
language and reality and aims to define the limits of science.
This final video then, is a direct visualisation of many of the statements posed by Wittgenstein in
his seminal work, as interpreted by the AI.
Here you can find some examples of the timestamps and corresponding language prompts used to create the visual narrative:
00:00 - 00:16 "The world is everything that is the case"
00:16 - 00:29 "Any one can either be the case or not be the case, and everything else remain the same"
00:29 - 00:41 "I am my world"
00:41 - 00:52 "According to Wittgenstein: The limits of my language mean the limits of my world"
01:00 - 01:26 "The picture is a model of reality"
01:26 - 01:42 "Objects form the substance of the world."
01:56 - 02:10 "The picture is a model of reality"
02:10 - 02:23 "A name is a primitive sign"
02:23 - 02:38 "What can be shown cannot be said"
02:38 - .... "There is indeed the inexpressible. This shows itself; it is the mystical"
05:15 - 05:20 "Whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must be silent"
05:20 - 05:27 "The world is everything, I am my world"

This a special song to us, written in the midst of the lockdown, dreaming about solitude and feeling the planet suffering and regenerating, the people going through a deep introspection and creating a new path…

‘Shore to Shore’ is the debut album set to drop from Phase on Metalheadz, and after the artist’s history on the label it was the next obvious step for both him as well as the imprint. Handpicked by Metalheadz label boss Goldie, the Belgium native residing in Switzerland is following in the footsteps of a Beatport No.1 on Metalheadz with his collaboration ‘Call In Me’ alongside Grey Code with a brand new album.
‘Shore to Shore’ brings back the all-encompassing listening experience of an album. With thirteen brand new records offered by the producer, each selection is as immersive as the next. Beginning with its title-track, it delivers layer upon layer of cascading breaks and stunning vocal crescendos from LaMeduza and it’s the optimum way for Phase to pull you into his domain. ‘Stress Out’ and ‘Frameworks’ provide a darker climate, juxtaposed by the ethereal tones of ‘Flowstone’ and ‘Cloud Contours’. The more stripped back assembly of ‘Something’s Missing’ pushes against the drum rhythms of ‘Inner Schism’, whilst LaMeduza appears once again for ‘Thirds’ and ‘Good For Nothing’. ‘Quick Fix’ flips the switch with its subterranean levels meanwhile the grooves of ‘Tatter Tune’ add more to the track list’s diversity. Ending the album, comes ‘Riven’ with its jazz-inspired breakdowns and ‘Only One’ with UK talent Tyler Daley – a name in his own right and highlighting the scope at Phase’s fingertips. Even the album’s artwork, hand painted by Italian designer Matteo Saccò is a visual representation of the album's journey. Mirroring its audio experiences of different emotions and turbulences throughout, it repackages these themes in a visual format. Highlighting once again that ‘Shore to Shore’ truly is an all encompassing project.
For the burgeoning producer, ‘Shore to Shore’ is one of his biggest projects. It lays bare the musicality he has available to him through years of dedication to the craft and with a combined journey, Metalheadz was the perfect place for its release. It proves that alongside several singles laying in its wake, April is looking to be another important month for both the producer and the LP’s home at Metalheadz.
Florence and The Machine elude to “something’s coming.” What ever could that be? Fans can only speculate with new images imerging on social media only 8 hours ago. February 23rd fans will know this is certain. Listeners can expect audio visuals that will be nothing short of top tier production quality. This is not a doubt. “Chapter 1” or “King” …..We will have to wait and see. Vocalist Florence Welch will stun. Captivating audiences with her strong vocal capabilities. Florence is in a class all her own. Sharing the stage in the group are keyboardist Isabella Summers, guitarist Rob Akroyd. Lastly their harpist Tom Monger amongst many many others. Florence and The Machine gained notoriety after emerging in 2007 in London. Exceptional vocal expression catapulted the group in popularity. Eccentric attention to detail sets this group apart from many. Florence is constantly remixed by other great artist. Who does not love a truckload of great new content!
