Eatbrain047 / Gydra - Killparty EP

The depth of the forest was unknown to those who lived at its verge. Shadows cast from the dense canopy seemed to reach out towards those who passed close by, wisps of darkness unfurling and twisting around the limbs of the youngest that dared to play at its sinister edge. The oldest stories of its roots passed across the creaking voices of the town pensioners hunched in the safety of others, discretely whispered and shot through with fearful looks. The allure of that dense and ancient place stretched back eternal, and bitter consequence waited for those who breached its dark heart.  The crew ignored the nonsense of such crones, pulling the carts of equipment under the cover of dusk until the sounds of the town were but a memory. The speaker stacks were raised against the night, strings of lights hung between the trees and purity of disturbed bass rolled against the surrounding trunks as they disentangled themselves from the mundane fiber of the lives they left behind. Twisting against one another as they let flood serotonin delight, they ignited an orgy of sonic symbiosis as the rave found its wings and took flight. The spores drifted imperceptibly into the clearing from the darkness around, lodging without discomfort in the eyes, ears and noses of the gathered young. And then the screaming started, the undulating mass of the gathering turned inward… devouring itself as limbs were separated from bodies, necks ripped as skin tore loose and the blood flowed freely over the gnashing faces of those left alive at the KILL PARTY…

GYDRA return to EATBRAIN in force, following up their well-received CYBORG EP with the dynamic, darkly driven but funk-laced assault of the KILL PARTY EP. From the old-school drenched piano and ultrafunk of the title track, to the playful sinister intent of PRIMITIVE INSTINCT, the filthy sub explorations of PROBLEM and the predatory sensibilities of IKRA – the 4 tracks within display the dynamic and exploratory character of the production outfit. This is Russian neurofunk at its finest, delivered on the platform that’s tailored exactly to the premiere kinetic nature of its content.

Document One - Haunted Spaces EP [Technique Recordings]

LISTEN NOW >>>>> http://bit.ly/2z9fVn0

Since Document One’s first release on Technique Recordings, they’ve formulated a particularly volatile compound of jazz, funk, hip-hop, and tech. And they’ve proven its effectiveness by chalking up enviable levels of radio airplay, DnB chart status, and rave destruction. Now, there’s a brand new five-track EP to deliver another dose.

This time, Document One are exploring the darker side of their nature,
guiding us into the shadows with the upright-bass-meets-murder-minded-
rap of Haunted Spaces. The EP’s title track builds through a sparse intro into a rhythmically-twisted drop. The punch and snap of kick and snare are coupled with a driving fusion of natural and synthetic basses. There’s a heartbeat of dancefloor funk, but this is no laid-back, casual groove. It’s a gritty, evil piece of music that sets the template for the rest of the release.

As we move through Pulse and Newton, we’re taken deeper into the neuro side of Document One’s sound. Epic sci-fi landscapes build into claustrophobic cyber-nightmares, populated by gritty basslines and metronomically savage beats. Pulse explores the call-and-response structure, giving us an intergalactic frequency-range war. Newton does things differently, focusing on laser-guided missile strikes of low-end to drive the track along. Here, these producers prove they can strip away the jazz and go for the pure dark tech flavour without sacrificing any of their dancefloor energy.

Rudeboy Fashion does something different again. Still, though, there’s no lack of that wide cinematic space, even when the rap vocal motif rolls in. The ultra-clean drums that drop with pitch-bending and modulating basses give this a feeling of classic techsteppers but brought bang up to date. Here, Document One show that they’re capable of exploring multiple sub-genres without losing the essence of their style.

To round off the EP, Clergy adds yet another twist to the tale. Reverberant pads and effects swirl around a restrained but rolling beat. Basslines morph and modulate in the low registers, while the emcee verse conjures night-shrouded imagery. This is a stripped-back production, with Document One combining just a few perfectly-constructed elements to create the vibe. Very dark, and a tune that discerning dancefloors are going to love.

This EP is set to reconfigure our expectations of Document One. It has their production fingerprints all over it, but presented in a different, more midnight-tinged, package. It just goes to show the artistry in their style, and it’s clear these tracks are another milestone in the onwards-and-upwards Doc One progression.

“Other Worlds” was inspired by a new collage from Sebastian Wahl , which we brought to life with the help of Black Lake Media. The collage shows portals emerge and unfold and evolve within and around a picture frame… a magical gateway, like the wardrobe in The Chronicles of Narnia.

On a sunny day in Brooklyn I sat down with Dorfex Bos to write a piece of music to go along with the visuals, and the ideas just came pouring out. We finished the song in 24 hours flat, with various instruments and sounds mapped to various details and dimensions of the various worlds within the collage.
