With two new records having already reasserted their underground appeal, Calyx & TeeBee are continuing their dance music hegemony into the summer. Since 2004, when their first collaborations began to emerge, they’ve blazed a trail for both Ram Records and drum & bass, becoming part of the genre’s foundations. And their next single Conquest is a testament to their undeniable musicianship, bringing the sonic mosaics which have made them so infamous throughout their careers.

Following a US-wide tour and upcoming sets at some of the biggest global electronic music festivals, including Las Vegas’ EDC, they’ve been meticulously manufacturing this next cut with the utmost precision. Rolling out on carefully picked out, distorted guitar strings and drummed up pads, the tell-tale sub bass which Calyx & TeeBee are renowned for suddenly kicks in. Cutting for the aural jugular, Conquest holds no prisoners with its full-scale assault. Each drum relay kicks harder and harder, chaotic yet with a diligently laid out mixdown. There’s no disputing their heavyweight title, with Conquest for a third time they’re still connected to their roots. That’s even despite their commercial success, with two critically acclaimed LPs lying in their wake.

It’s time for the music to do the talking. Even two decades on,
it remains their loudest and most celebrated feature.

"For this chapter of the Emergence story I wanted to escape the computational and data-driven approaches often used in other parts of the project, and try something more humanised. I found an amazing artist called Sabine Volkert, who hand-draws every frame of her videos, which creates a very particular sort of feeling, and one that seemed to me to fit with the feeling of the music and of the concept involved - the tinkering of animal development via random mutation to create a rich variation of forms on which natural selection can act - the mechanism of Darwinian Evolution.

Sabine told this story with warping morphologies, exploring the range of animal structures we see around us. All of these different structures have many shared underlying principles, such as segmentation (units built around analogues of a spinal cord), modularity (organs as individual units), and bilateral symmetry (mirrored body structure to give directionality for senses). There are many more of these common principles shared amongst animal forms, which are coded for and created by shared molecular mechanisms like the genetic code and gene regulation, which guide the process of development to create each different animal.

Because of this mechanism of conserved systems and principles, random mutations in small regions of DNA can produce large scale, coordinated changes in bodily structure. It's evolution of evolvability - nature has set up system which is likely to produce a wide range of potentially viable, but different animals, as the best bet for survival in an unpredictable world." Max Cooper

"For Max' beautiful track Organa I grounded the video's visual concept and stylistic choices in its thematic background, while leaving a lot of room for experimentation throughout the entire process.

Following only a set of rules for the standalone animation chains and a rough overall structure, everything was pieced together gradually, evolving into the final compositions guided by the musical cues as everything unfolds over time." Sabine Volkert

DGTL presents MODULAR [Official aftermovie DGTL Amsterdam 2017]

DGTL presents Modular

Turn up the speaker and relive DGTL Amsterdam 2017 like never before!

The film builds further on this year’s overarching theme of Modularity. In engineering terms, it means the degree to which a system’s components can be separated and recombined. In nature, modularity refers to the construction of cellular organisms, that join together their standardized units to form larger compositions. While in music, it hints to the modular synthesizer, one of the most common instruments in dance music. The theme reoccurred throughout festival efforts, its Art and Revolution programs and its stage designs.

Camo & Krooked - Mandala ft. Mefjus - Out Now on Ram Records

Get it here -
https://CamoKrooked.lnk.to/MandalaPR

The signing of electronic duo Camo & Krooked to Ram Records / BMG was met with adulation. Merging a dance music label with twenty-five years of industry-lead experience with one of drum & basses most iconic duos, the news signalled a high-calibre succession of releases for 2016 and beyond. Since then, their latest three singles and the announcement of their Ram debutMosaik has demonstrated just how hard working the pair are, having already received critical acclamation for their previous three albums and recent BBC Radio1 Essential Mix.

Their next output is in the form of Mandala, a collaboration between Camo & Krooked and Austrian tech pioneer Mefjus. A leader within his own field, Mefjus brings his expertly crafted sonics to a stellar release, one which bites through distorted bass and heavy drum peddles. Mefjus adds a jagged edge to Camo & Krooked’s production standard, providing a juxtaposition which pushes lumbering kick and the punchy snare Camo & Krooked champion. Signalling more featuring artists on the LP’s track listing, Camo & Krooked have enlisted one of the genre’s heaviest hitters for Mandala. The following guests on Mosaik are just as impressive.

The penultimate release before Mosaik drops, Mandala signifies the diversity their LP pedestals. But with a colourful history in their wake, it comes as no surprise and Mosaik stands as a welcome addition to Ram Records historic back catalogue.
