Erb N Dub & North Base - Punk Rock [Technique Recordings]

Sometimes you just have to look at the artist names to know a release is going to be something special. North Base have just nailed one huge collaboration, Third Eye, with Turno and Harry Shotta, and now they’ve arrived on Technique for another. And, when their powers combine with the ultra-technical musicality of Erb N Dub, the results are bound to be explosive.

Punk Rock goes straight in with the drama. A layer of distorted rhythm guitar keeps the beat, while huge chords and reverberating percussive strikes build the tension. The dark tinge of wailing guitar and pads in the high end ramp the anticipation even further. Then unashamedly aggressive vocal samples take us to a drop that we already know is going to be carnage.

The rough-hewn grind of the guitars in the intro is transferred to the bass, a serrated edge of fluctuating textures that warps and modulates under neck-snapping beats. Then there are those drum fills every sixteen bars that ramp the energy up to to a brand new level. And don’t miss the subtlety in the little sparking delayed and reverbing effects that ride over the top to give that extra push onwards. This is going to hit dancefloors hard.

We don’t often see guitar-led music mesh with DnB, but Erb N Dub and North Base have demonstrated just how it should be done. Here, the uncompromising savagery of punk meets precision engineering, and these producers prove, once again, that they’re at the top of their game.

I went into the studio and made a New Orleans bounce record with a legend from the 504, Keno. Eventually, everything clicked and I flipped it into a hard house / moombahton tune. Big fat bass on this track. Enjoy!

More big things coming soon...
Much love,

The Lab Los Angeles is Mixmag and Smirnoff Sound Collective's weekly post-work unwind where we stream only the finest American and international DJs, live and direct from our Downtown LA office. For this one, Mau5trap takes over The Lab LA with Feed Me and BlackGummy b2b No Mana.

Founded by Deadmau5 in 2007, Mau5trap is a Canadian label that has housed a variety of releases that has ranged from Moguai to Chris Lake to Excision and more recently, with exciting newcomers like Matt Lange, REZZ, Attlas and more. It's been an exciting 10 years for Mau5trap, which has looked over iconic releases over the decade including Skrillex's 'Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites' back in 2010, Feed Me's two-track EP 'The Spell' / 'Raw Chicken' and REZZ's 'The Silence Is Deafening' and 'Something Wrong Here' EPs.

FEED ME
Seeing his first release out on the label on 2008 as Mau5trap's first external artist, Feed Me has returned to the mau5trap family most recently with his inclusion on Deadmau5's currently ongoing 'Lots of Shows in a Row' North American tour. Born Jon Gooch, the British producer is also the mind behind several other aliases including his d'n'b alias Spor, Seventh Stitch and of course, Feed Me.

BLACKGUMMY
Iman Marouf created the BlackGummy identity in 2013 following a trip to the Middle East and Asia. Trained by Steve Duda and fascinated by sound design after graduating from music production school Icon Collective, BlackGummy released his first EP 'Lullaby' on Mau5trap in 2015 and has called the label home ever since.

NO MANA
No Mana is a mysterious Los Angeles-based producer that keeps his identity shrouded behind a curious 8-bit stylized cartoon. His sound fits perfectly in the Mau5trap realm, harkening back to early Deadmau5 tones, flirting between ethereal vocals and powerful electro builds.

On opening duties we welcome Rinzen, a Los Angeles-based artist who saw his first original release out on mau5trap's 'We Are Your Friends Vol. 6' compilation. See more from him here: https://soundcloud.com/rinzen

Mau5trap takes over The Lab LA in a dual celebration not only for the Label of the Decade poll, but also while Deadmau5 takes over the city of Los Angeles for a four-night run of shows at The Shrine.

The Lab NYC is Mixmag and Smirnoff Sound Collective's weekly afterwork party where we stream the best American and international DJs from the intimate space connected to our Brooklyn office. This Friday, Mixmag welcomes Charlotte De Witte and Ledisko for a special Turbo Recordings showcase.

Founded in 1998 by Tiga, the Montreal based imprint of Turbo Recordings has established itself as a leading outlet for techno, electro, and house. Having helped launch Tiga’s career during its formative years, the label also played a critical role in the success of acts like Chromeo, Proxy and Azari & III among others. In more recent years, Turbo has continued to supply quality dancefloor focused music, releasing material from JoeFarr, Duke Dumont, Randomer, Gesaffelstein and Charlotte De Witte.

Representing Turbo Recordings in The Lab NYC will be Charlotte De Witte, a talented Belgian producer who delivers a dark, hypnotic and edgy motif touching on various forms of techno. Her debut ‘Weltschmerz’ EP released on Turbo in 2015 introduced her brooding style, while she followed that up with her ‘Sehnsucht’ EP the following year and was a standout on the label, showcasing the scope of her sound with six distinct tracks. She is one of the brightest young talents in the scene today and there is still much to look forward to as her career blossoms.

Also representing Turbo on the evening is label manager Ledisko, a Montreal-based DJ who is the youngest label manager that Turbo has had since its inception.
